Regular Guy started by suggesting that Red White & Blue beach north of Santa Cruz is reputedly the friendliest and least "weird" beach in Southern California. He went on to write...
"Here are directions to Red White & Blue beach (Santa Cruz): the beach is at milepost 24.9 on Highway 1, 4.1 miles north of the Santa Cruz city limit and 43.2 miles south of the junction of Highway 1 and 92 in Half Moon Bay. Look for a large Red White and Blue mailbox numbered 5021 on the west side of the highway. There is an easy to use trail that connects the parking lot with the 600 yard long beach. No cameras drugs guns or dogs allowed. The beach is open 10am till 5am daily -- the campground is 24 hrs. Call 832-423-6332 for weather information."
"Here are directions to More Mesa (Santa Barbara): 101 freeway North to Turnpike Ave off-ramp (make a left) to Hollister Ave (make a left) to Puente Dr (make a right) travel roughly 3/4 of a mile to Mockingbird lane. Park on the streets around Mockingbird but not ON Mockingbird (no parking signs) Travel up the hill and out on to the Mesa. An approximate 10 minute walk to the Eucalyptus trees at the edge of the Mesa marks the spot where the stairs run down to the beach."
"Here are directions to Black's Beach (San Diego): enter beach at the paved walking path that starts at the intersection of Blackgold and La Jolla Farms. If walking or cycling from main campus of UCSD, follow La Jolla Farms Rd. to Blackgold, then go down the paved pathway that begins there (La Jolla Farms Road is the next street south of, and parallel to, N. Torrey Pines). If driving, there's free parking along Blackgold. If using bus, take 301 or 34 to main campus of UCSD, then follow same walking directions."
He commented that "membership" is not necessary to make acquaintances and friends and reminded that about 400 miles separates Santa Cruz from San Diego.
He also recommended San Onofre, south of San Clemente,
on the north side of Camp Pendleton Marine Base and suggested a search in Groups.Google.com for directions to San
Onofre.
Charles Daw wrote, "We've never been to a club in California but Lupin gets good reports and good press."
"Black's Beach in La Jolla, just north of San Diego and San Onofre, between LA and San Diego both are excellent beaches with volley ball, many friendly users, etc. There are more than a hundred other clothing optional beaches in California, some of which have web pages."
"Harbin Hot Springs is in the mountains ca. 25 miles north of the town of Calistoga -- the northernmost community in the Napa Valley. Harbin is located on a huge property and has extensive facilities -- e.g. rooms, camping, food service, stores, pools, a sauna, sunbathing decks etc.-- and numerous activities -- e.g. yoga, movies, etc. The water is highly saturated with gas, probably CO2, and in the pools it's sort of like soaking in champagne or club soda. Harbin is very, very New Age. It is vegetarian and drugs, including alcohol, are not permitted. The entire property is clothing optional. I loved Harbin and have been there twice."
"Wilbur Hot Springs also is located on an immense property but has limited facilities. Wilbur is considerably farther from the main tourist areas and much more remote -- ca. 6-8 miles off the highway on a dirt road. Wilbur offers rooms and a dormitory in a late 19th or early 20th Century resort hotel/stagecoach stop, and also has camping. Guests must bring all their own food and there is an excellent kitchen. The kitchen has gas. The only electricity on the property is solar. Clothing is optional only in the bath house. There are hot pools with different temperatures. The water comes from deep in the earth and is heavily mineralized, actually "oily", and slightly sulfurous. There also is a swimming pool, a sauna and a yoga deck. I also very much enjoyed Wilbur."
"Both Harbin and Wilbur have many repeat or regular guests. Both have day use but at both most of the users are overnight guests. Harbin is large with hundreds of users. Wilbur is small with a capacity of perhaps 60 or 75 and probably no more than 30 or 40 guests there most of the time. San Onofre, Harbin, Wilbur, and possibly Black's Beach have easily found web pages."
"We have not been to Orr Hot Springs but it also gets excellent reports. Orr does not have a web page but you can find information about it on various web pages."
"You should also look a rec.nude and send your question there -- you'll find a lot of information and will get many additional answers. Keep in mind that California is a large place and much depends on where you are going. It's probably 600 miles from Black's Beach to Harbin, Wilbur or Orr."

"Swallows / Sun Island in El Cajon (San Diego more or less). Nice facilities as far as pool and snack bar and such. We rented a small apartment that was really basic but clean and comfortable. One of the friendliest clubs we have ever been to."
"Glen Eden Sun Club in Carona. Absolutely one of our favorite clubs. We usually rent a 'Park Model' i.e. a caravan that is built to just be put on site and left. Inexpensive and very nice. Great grounds, pool and such. Very nice club house and the restaurant is good. There are also food stores near by. We usually self catered. Lots of wide open spaces and the hiking trails and desert scenery is very nice."
"Lupin Naturist Club in Los Gatos. Very conformable with a rustic feel. Great pool and very nice hiking paths. The rental accommodations are first rate. We would the people to be not the friendliest. Maybe it was us. They tended to be a little clubby."
"Desert Shadows Inn in Palm Springs. Small place but everything is well done. Has all the little touches that make life pleasant, only nudist resort I was ever at that provided monogrammed bath robes for guest usage. Great pool and nice restaurant. We like to take walks in the evening and this place is much too small for any real walks but get dressed and Palm Springs is a good visit."
"Elysium Fields in Malibu before they moved. Not my cup of tea. Tend much too much towards 'New Age' and such. Lovely place for all that but as I say this was before they moved."
"Quick visits to Olive Dell, Morning side Inn, Deer Park."
"If you want any more in depth information let me know. I live on the other coast of America but get to California a lot. Once in a while as a tourist but usually on business."
Half Moon Bay near the town of the same name was also recommended as was Gray Whale Cove near Pacifica.
