First impressions are excellent at Serignan Plage Nature. As you enter reception, the multi-lingual staff are both friendly and helpful. They even take your through the booking-in procedure naked – an ideal introduction to the relaxed and informal attitude of the resort.

This really is a great place if your idea of a holiday is simply to laze around and soak up the sun. There is no pool on site, but there’s hardly a need for one since Serignan’s main asset is its direct access to the Mediterranean right on its doorstep. The residents are predominantly (like us) families with young children there to take advantage of the wide, sandy and immaculately clean beach. We happened to go at the tail end of a French heat wave, and the sea was warm enough to swim in at both ends of the day – at eight in the morning and eight in the evening.

The accommodation ranges from simple pitches for tents to permanently built chalets fixed and we opted for a mobile home which was comfortable bordering on the luxurious, spotlessly clean and, equally importantly, easy to keep clean. For us, who have spent our holidays over the last few years living under canvas, this was luxury. There is a surprisingly well-stocked mini-market (which bakes its own bread on the premises daily) and a bar/restaurant open every day

There is no obligation to wear clothes at any time, although people generally got dressed to eat out in the evening. But, despite the informal atmosphere, Serignan is managed very efficiently and professionally – one morning when I went to report that our Butgaz bottle seemed to be empty, I had barely walked back to our mobile home before a new one was delivered and fitted.

Serignan is handy for the brash delights of la Plage Naturiste at Cap D’Agde. This was the third consecutive year in which we visited the Cap. Perhaps I’m getting more prudish as I get older, but I found its vaguely sleazy ambience more blatant than I had previously – more massage parlours and fetish clubs, more people showing off their ‘intimate’ piercings. There is even (a first for this year) a porn video and sex shop next to the newsagent. Whatever the reason, the contrast with the family atmosphere of Serignan couldn’t be greater, where the tranquility is interrupted only by the sounds of seemingly interminable games of boules.

In the evenings, there is entertainment on a fairly modest scale around the bar area.  A real high spot was the night when an eight-piece trad' jazz band appeared and led us, armed with Chinese lanterns, onto the beach for a very impressive fireworks display. The only slight downside was that, though there are extensive activities for children, they are conducted exclusively in French. This proved a serious disappointment for our 6-year old daughter.

Adjoining the site is a larger textile site owned and run by the same company. If you get tired of the sea, you are welcome to use their swimming pool – the access is via a closed but unlocked door in the dividing fence (although you have to endure the walk home back wearing a wet and soggy costume). But be warned: after spending a few days naked, the sight of so many people lounging around in the heat wearing shorts and tee-shirts comes as a bit of a shock.
