We went to Kefalonia in August 2001. This was during the hype for Captain Corelli's Mandolin and included public holidays in both UK and Kefalonia, so I guess it was the busiest possible time. Bus services are pretty poor; you will need a car nevertheless it is a beautiful island. My thanks to Cap'n Barefoot's website. We did not visit every beach, these are the ones we visited.
Avithos
is the best by far. From Argostoli go along the south coast road
past the airport to Svoronata. About half a kilometre after a
taverna called Dum Spiros Spero and a petrol station, the main
road turns sharp left. Go straight on, signposted Avithos, pass a
go-cart track and in 2 Km park at the beach. The lower taverna
is better than the higher. Turn left, facing seawards, (east) and
walk for about 10 minutes along the beach and beyond the statutory rock. The
naturist beach is delightful. There is sand with very little shingle, but
a few underwater boulders. We found mostly couples and no
voyeurs/exhibitionists. You can also approach from the east, Paliolithos (no camping, no nudism) but its a rough road, and
a rocky walk. There is a pretty walk (dressed) back from there
to the car park through the fields and olive groves.
Litheros
is about 2 Km west of Lourda which is a well advertised/signposted
resort. It's signposted down a very narrow lane off the road
between Lourda and Trapezaki. The taverna is nothing special.
There's a little harbour, turn right
facing seawards (west) and walk 7 minutes to pass the rock as usual. We found
some naturists, more textiles, umbrellas, but no reaction from
other users or farmers in tiny fields behind beach. The beach is sand and a
little shingle.
Mounda
beach is one and a half kilometres west of Skala and signposted off
the main road. There is a huge, quiet sandy beach stretching east and west. To
east (left facing seawards) it is deserted BUT weed increases as you
go in that direction and a hotel is under construction on Cape Mounda.
Skala
is very developed. There is a pretty town with trees behind beach. Turn
right facing seawards (south), drive and then walk south about 1
km to the usual rock. Very popular naturist beach, sand and
shingle.
Mirtos
is well advertised, has large pebbles, is very busy, and has no naturists.
Aghia Kiriakis
is very quiet. It is best approach by road via Zola and has a good,
simple taverna but big shingle. Quiet to east (right facing
seawards) popular with camper vans, we did not investigate further.
Xi
(pronounced ksee) is quite busy and there's a big hotel. If you turn
right facing seawards (west) beyond the usual rock it is NOT
naturist; local people come to smear clay from the cliffs onto
their skins, I suppose its a beauty treatment. Further to the west (west of Cape
Xi) is a quiet beach, but there were no cars
parked on the road, access may be difficult and we did not investigate.
