Back

On holiday to Naxos in the again for the first two weeks of August 2003. Just thought I'd update the newsgroup on the main naturist beaches.

The little cove below the church at Aghia Anna is still 100% naturist with sunbathing on the rocks around the bay. Perfect !!! :-)

Although there seemed to be fewer holidaymakers in general on Naxos this year, there seemed to be rather more naturists, particularly using the Northern end of the huge Plaka beach. There seemed to be more families too. Also and more interestingly and encouraging was the appearance of naturists under the sun umbrellas and using the provided sun loungers that now spoil the central part of the beach from north of Maragas camp site to Plaka Camping! I hadn't noticed this coexistence in the more commercial part of the beach in previous years. It could be that the commercialism has encroached so far that it has to take on the naturists that use that part of the beach. There is also the continuing development of villas along the dust road (track really) behind the beach spoiling the once rugged & remote beauty of the place. The bus now goes much further down the beach road than in previous years which accounts for the almost completely textile southern end of the beach.

The days of having 100 yards or more of the best beach in the Med to yourself and to be able to walk the miles of sand naked seem to be over. Ah well, that's progress I suppose.

The following day Ian added...

Thanks for the excellent report. My wife and I had a wonderful holiday on Naxos a couple of years ago and walked for miles along Plaka beach. The naturists tended to remain south of the sun beds. Its a great shame the road has been surfaced as this will bring more and more textiles to Plaka particularly those who don't want to walk too far.

We will go back I'm sure, do you know of any other naturist beaches elsewhere on the island?

This additional information was sent direct to the NEFF team by Jeremy in October 2003

We went to Naxos at the end of September and found many beaches where we could peel off. The trouble was the wind which seemed to persist almost every day. The beach near the Paradise Taverna was excellent and all naturist at the North end. We went there a couple of times but were eventually driven off by the wind. We then found a South facing beach with plenty of sand dunes and bushes to provide shelter at Alyko, just North of Pyrgaki. The sand is soft but rather pebbly in places. The worst aspect was the vegetative matter, some of which was prickly from the spines on the bushes, but for seclusion and lovely bathing it was a great success. We were able to have sex on the beach with no problem. The skeleton structure at the North end of the beach, where there is an abandoned building site, was a blot on the landscape but when you are sunbathing you don't notice it. I counted about 12 people on the beach at maximum. The sea was calm and the gently sloping rock ledge, which extended about 5 yards into the sea, was covered with sand. Further out, you could wade for about 40 yards before getting out of your depth. Pretty cold water at Naxos. I measured it to be about 76 deg. F on my thermometer.
