My wife and I returned earlier this week from a break staying at the new naturist resort Eagle Peak at Cotobro, an exclusive suburb on the outskirts of Almunecar. The drive east from Malaga takes about an hour, much of it on a new motorway. The venture is owned and run by Peter and Liz who moved from Guildford to Spain last October and spent the winter completely redesigning and refurbishing the accommodation.
They found a beautiful location (and very different from either Vera Playa or Costa Natura) with stunning views over the sea and the local official naturist beach at Playa del Muerto. The property is constructed on high ground which provides an almost 360 degree vista from the large sunroof on top of the building.
There are 6 apartments ranging from bed-sit studios, to a luxury 2-bedroom penthouse flat. We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment with a separate lounge and a small terrace with table and chairs. The property was previously operated as a restaurant with some hotel bedrooms, but Peter and Liz have made major alterations to the layout and installed brand new kitchens, bathrooms and furniture (our cooker and equipment sparkled, most of it having never been used).
What else does Eagle Peak have to offer? In addition to the warm hospitality of the owners there is a range of facilities of interest to naturists. Take the enormous sunroof, which I estimated measured over 100 feet long and up to 25 feet wide at its broadest. It was furnished with tables, chairs, and brand new sun beds with thick squashy cushions. There was a shower and even a small lift to deliver tea, coffee, cold drinks and ice creams from the floor below. Also an electric barbecue and an outdoor shower. Approximately a third of the terrace was protected by a sunshade, which was most welcome even in mid-April! The weather for the time of year was a surprise - we didn't see a cloud during the whole of our stay and the temperature felt more like July. I guess it isn't called the Costa Tropical for nothing.
Trees in the garden produce a variety of fruit, including lemons, tangerines and bananas. Guests are invited to help themselves. The lemon trees overhanging the lower terrace had some of the biggest fruit we had ever seen. Apart from certain areas of the garden, lots of screening has been provided, which facilitates the run of the property sans clothes. There are two long flights of quite steep steps and a spiral staircase to reach the sunroof from the lower apartments. However the climb, provided you are able to make it, is well worth the effort.
Peter has constructed a boules court and he also offers an inflatable powerboat, which visitors can use to explore the area (there is a charge of £35 for the day that includes launching, fuel, insurance and mobile telephone in case of emergency). Much of the coast between Nerja and Almunecar is completely undeveloped and more reminiscent of a picturesque Greek Island shoreline. There's lots of diving and snorkelling because of the clear water.
A hire car is almost essential. The local naturist beach is about 15 minutes walk downhill, but you face a long steep climb on the way back. However, in the car you can park less than 5 minutes away, and simply walk along the attractive level pedestrian promenade that has been built around the rocks at the edge of the bay. Also, there is a second larger and slightly more developed naturist beach, Playa de Cantarrijan, which has 2 restaurants and is about 15 minutes drive west along the coast towards Nerja. You can park on the beach and it is very popular with the locals, especially at the weekend.
Bookings at Eagle Peak are normally for a minimum of 7 nights, Saturday to Saturday. However, at short notice (10 days in our case) it might be worth asking if you want something different. Our apartment cost in the region of £25 per night, which obviously increases in the height of the season and decreases in winter. We had never met Peter or Liz before but we were hugely impressed by their vision, their attention to detail and simply what they have achieved. We also enjoyed good company with the other guests and if the resort sounds of interest have a look at Eagle Peaks website.
