When I rejoined the group, I agreed that I would talk about naturism as I enjoyed it in Munich, the capital of the southern state of Bavaria.

I was living in that city for 18 months October 1998 to end March 2000, working on a Year 2K project for a local mobile radio company, although it was partly owned by BT at that time.

Naturally I was keen to explore naturism in Germany but was concerned that Bavaria was a very Catholic orientated place. This turned out to be true but naturism was everywhere!

Firstly, the swimming pools. I found that one of the regular city owned and run pools had a regular nude night once a week. This pool, 'Nordbad' was on my tram route home from work, so that was easy! The pool was good with a learner pool and a sauna suite (which I did not use) and a 'canal' to an outside pool. One of those arrangements where you can swim out to the outer pool and back in again. This was open throughout the winter. The outside pool was not large but also heated, of course. I think that other city pools had the same thing but I did not bother to check, once I found that the pool closest to me was suitable.

In the summer months, the city's open air pools were also available to naturists. The one that I used was called the Dantebad and is in Dantestrasse. There were two pools. The slightly smaller one (but still a 25m pool) was only for naturists. There was wooden fencing with a 'Z' entrance path and we had a large sun lawn too. If you wanted to go to the cafe and toilets, then you put on a towel or cozzie.

There were no restrictions about entry to the naturist section. The staff were on watch (as in the UK) and everyone behaved very well. As we also have here, the folks did tend to self-police but I never saw anything difficult. Entry was at the same turnstile, paying the one price, irrespective of which pool you used. All this provided by the local council!!!!

The famous Englischer Garten are a very large city park, spread either side of the River Isar that runs through the city. The water is generally cold as it has run off the Alps and much of it from the glacier! From the mountains to Munich is only about 100km, it has no time to warm up.

However, there are several places for naturist free sunning and it is considered normal and acceptable. No one bothers you and you can choose the quieter grassy areas but most choose to congregate around the shingle area. This provides the security of lots of other naturists around you but you are sitting on the rocks. Munich can get VERY hot in the summer. In 1999 it regularly got to 30C and I got my backside very burnt!

I asked one colleague who had lived in the city for ten years if it would be alright to sunbathe naked on the balcony of my rented apartment. Did he think that the locals would protest? He said, they would think me strange if I was to wear a cozzie on my own balcony! Certainly I encountered no problems.

I recommend the city and Bavaria on almost any level. For holidays, for culture, for mountains, lakes and a never ending list. The food is brilliant but don't ask me about the beer as I don't drink it! Yes, I did go to the Oktoberfest but I drank wine.

Simon
